PIKIRAN RAKYAT - On Saturday, 13 July 2024, the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, was involved in an unfortunate incident while delivering a campaign speech in Pennsylvania. He sustained an injury to his right ear. It would be reasonable to inquire whether the shooting incident will result in enhanced security measures for President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

Ari Dwipayana, Coordinator of the President's Official Staff, kindly clarified that the Paspampres maintain a vigilant presence while allowing flexibility regarding the needs of the President of Indonesia, the country's highest authority.

"It still allows President Jokowi to interact with the people flexibly. Nevertheless, he is still afforded the protection and security that he requires," he said, as reported by Pikiran-Rakyat.com from Antara on Monday, 15 July 2024.

He explained that the Presidential Security Forces (Paspampres) consider protecting Jokowi their most crucial task.

"The security of the President is always the Paspampres's primary concern, and we are grateful for the support of other security forces in this regard," he said.

On Sunday, 14 July 2024, he conveyed these sentiments through his X account. 

"I am deeply saddened by the shooting of former President Donald Trump today. "In a democratic world, there is no justification for violence in any form," he said in @jokowi.

Jokowi also expressed his hope for Donald Trump's recovery through his tweet. 

"My prayers are with those affected by this incident, and I hope for a full and speedy recovery for all those involved," he said.

Initially, Donald Trump was situated at a podium on an outdoor stage. After approximately six minutes of speech, a sound resembling a gunshot was heard.

Donald Trump paused his speech, which was addressing the issue of illegal migration, to allow for a moment of reflection. At that moment, a slight trickle of blood appeared from his ear.

"Trump immediately closed his right ear, observed the blood on his hand, and then immediately dropped to the ground behind the podium. The audience reacted with shock, and many immediately crouched down,” according to the Reuters’ description.

After that, agents from the Secret Service entered the stage and proceeded to surround Donald Trump, who was still situated behind the podium.

In addition, law enforcement officers armed with rifles also made their way onto the stage.

Once more, the sound of shots was heard. Consequently, the Secret Service agents and officers took Mr. Trump into custody for approximately 25 seconds.

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced that it has identified the individual who shot Donald Trump. He is a 20-year-old young man.

"The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the individual believed to be involved in the incident in Butler, Pennsylvania on 13 July, which resulted in an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump," he said.
